In this episode of the Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon visits La Frite, Sherman Oaks, California. This French restaurant opened in 1972 and is run by Andre. It was a very successful restaurant. In the introduction part, Andre tells that business is not doing well because his son Alex and daughter Celine are competing against each other for the restaurant. Celine tells that no one listens to her. She thinks there is much more that can be done with the restaurant but Alex won't talk to her. Alex thinks that Celine should not be in the restaurant. Chef Martin considers his food as good and thinks that there is no issue with the menu.

Before Gordon visits the restaurant, Andre comes to Gordon’s restaurant and meets him. He tells him that the main issue with the restaurant is the competition between his son and daughter. 2 years ago Celine started her own business, but when it did not work out well for her, she came back to the restaurant. Alex feels threatened as he thought he will own the restaurant. Gordon arrives at the restaurant and notices very old dessert case in mid of dining room. He takes out dessert place which is probably in the case for the last 20 years. Gordon meets Andre and his daughter Celine.

Yes, the restaurant was bought by George Zaoui in July 2016 and was rebranded as Modo Mio Cucina Rustica, an Italian restaurant in September 2017.

Food Sampling:

Gordon orders quiche Lorraine, La Frite salad and a seafood crepe. As he places the order, Gordon remarks about dated interiors of the restaurant. The first order La Frite salad is very large portion wise, is bland and rich with acidic dressing. The seafood crepe is soggy, cold at the sides and hot in the middle. The quiche is piping hot and Gordon thinks it is coming out from microwave instead of an oven. He asks the restaurant manager to confirm it. Chef Martin denies the use of the microwave.

Gordon goes into the kitchen to meet chef Martin. He gives Martin inputs on the food. Gordon thinks that food was pathetic. Gordon then asks about quiche. Martin, at first, denies the use of the microwave but later agrees on it. Gordon tells him that if he can not change, he needs to go. Chef Martin does not take criticism well and starts to walk out. Gordon follows him and asks him about his issues. Chef Martin tells Gordon that it is hard to work with Celine. Celine is overpowering and is bossy.

20 minutes before the dinner service, Alex walks in into the restaurant, Gordon arrives too. Andre is unavailable as he has gone a hockey game. Gordon sits down with Alex to listen to his side of the story. He tells Gordon that Celine should not be here. Her presence does not make things any better. Gordon asks him to list issues with the restaurant. Alex does not think that the restaurant is having any issues, which bugs Gordon.

At the dinner service, Gordon notices that overcooked and unseasoned is being sent out. Customers are not happy with the food and they are returning most of the food. Gordon tells Alex about the quality of the food, he does not listen to him. Gordon and Celine try to talk to Alex but he does not care. Alex laid-back attitude surprises Gordon, Celine walks out of the restaurant and cries in the parking lot. Restaurant manager Gayle goes out and talks to Celine. Gordon asks Celine to call her father and ask him to come to the restaurant.

Andre arrives at the restaurant and Gordon tells him about Alex’s attitude. Andre explains to Gordon that this is how it is with Andre. This has created a lot of problems for him also. Gordon tells Andre that he can not fix the restaurant alone and needs Andre as well.

The next morning, Gordon makes Andre sit in front of a camera feed and goes on to talk to Celine. Celine admits that her brother resents her. Her father has a different relationship with Alex, she adds. At that moment Alex also comes in into the restaurant. Gordon asks Celine to explain the same thing to her brother. Alex admits that he created a wall between them because he felt threatened. He agrees to Celine’s point that they need to work together to fix the restaurant. Andre is happy to see his son and daughter united.

As the first change, Gordon removes replaces the dessert case with a crepe station in the dining area. At the dinner service, Alex is handling the crepe station with Gayle. Celine is heading the kitchen. While the kitchen struggles, crepe station is making the customers smile. Alex is happy with running the crepe station. After a dreadful dinner service, the owners and Ramsay are aware of the main issue, that is, inefficient head chef.

Relaunch:

Overnight, Gordon’s design team gives a much-needed makeover to the restaurant. The next day, new decor is well received by the owners. Gordon shows them the new menu, there are less but modern dishes on the menu. Gordon introduces chef Chuy, who is brought in to help the kitchen. Gordon shows them the dishes from the new menu. Everyone is happy with the changes and the food.

At the relaunch night, kitchen starts off strong and sends out food fast. Customers love the new dishes, but, soon chef Martin stops communicating. Martin does not respond to Celine and food stops going out if the kitchen. One table threatens to leave if food is not served. Gordon interferes and asks Celine to take control of the restaurant. Celine asks chef Chuy to take control of the line, food starts going out and customers are happy with the food. The relaunch is successful. After the relaunch, Gordon tells them that as the family is working together now, they must transform the kitchen as well.

What happened next?

As the episode closes, they show that Chef Chuy is brought in full time. Celine and Alex started working together. Yelp reviews were mostly positive after the relaunch (Yelp link in the resources). Gordon revisits La Frite after one year of the relaunch. Celine told Gordon that business is good and is picking up. Gordon also meets Alex, who tells Gordon that Celine and he are working together. Gordon tries mushroom crepe and a quiche, as per him, food was excellent. Gordon also meets Andre during the revisit.

The restaurant was bought by George Zaoui in July 2016 and it operated with the same name till September 2017 (Link in the resources). In September 2017, the restaurant was rebranded as an Italian eatery with name Modo Mio Cucina Rustica. Online reviews are positive (Check Yelp in the resources).

As of 2018, Celine Ramillon is working at Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern as General Manager.
