In this episode of the Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon visits The Grasshopper Also, Carlstadt, NJ. This family-owned Irish Pub and restaurant is being run by Mitch, his wife Maureen and her father Chief. They started this restaurant 17 years ago. Chief has over 40 years of restaurant experience. Early response was great and they were busy, but, it has changed now.

Maureen and Chief think that Mitch is not doing what he should do. Mitch is doing the other small and random tasks. As per floor manager Annette, despite spending ridiculous time in the restaurant, Mitch is not productive. Also, she tells us that there is no communication between Mitch and the staff. Mitch is under a lot of pressure and he has no option other than Gordon’s help.

Gordon arrives at the restaurant and meets Maureen, Chief, and Mitch. He wants to sit with them individually for a better understanding of the situation. Maureen tells Gordon that his father blames Mitch for everything. As per Chief, Mitch is the biggest issue with the restaurant. He tells Gordon that he has invested around $3 million. He now regrets the decision of making Mitch part of this restaurant. Mitch tells Gordon that his father in law is the biggest problem with the restaurant. Mitch is confident about the food quality and Gordon moves on to food sampling.

Food Sampling:

Gordon talks to Annette and asks about the food. Annette rates food three out of ten at best. Gordon orders French onion soup, a shepherd’s pie, and fisherman platter. Annette brings in the first dish, Gordon does not like the French onion soup. It does not taste good and Gordon sends it back. The shepherd’s pie is of beef instead of sheep. Also, there is beef gravy floating on top of the mash. It has a glue-like gravy, tastes bad and is cold. Gordon asks Maureen to taste it and she agrees with Gordon’s comments. Fisherman’s platter is the worst. Scallops are bland, dry and rubbery. He sends the platter back.

Gordon goes into the kitchen to meet the chef. Gordon asks the chef if he tastes the food before sending out. Chef confirms that he tastes the food and he thinks that food is okay. Gordon asks them to show him the source of scallops. Gordon sees the disintegrating and slimy scallops that have previously been frozen. He also finds old and slimy chicken, raw and cooked meat together and blood in mozzarella sticks. Gordon says that if he had seen the state of kitchen earlier, he would have never eaten anything here.

Gordon also tells them that they are not in a position to run the dinner service. The state of the kitchen is disgusting. He asks them to clean the place and get rid of old stock. He cancels the dinner service and staff gets on to cleaning the kitchen. Maureen takes charge of the kitchen cleaning.

The next day Gordon visits Maureen at her house. Gordon sees an old picture of Mitch and does not recognize him. Maureen tells Gordon that Mitch is a lost man. Mitch is low on confidence. He puts in too much time into the restaurant. Gordon tells Maureen that they need to bring the passion and energy back in Mitch. He assures her that reforms will change from the dinner service.

Gordon reaches the restaurant and has a talk with Mitch. He asks Mitch to take charge of the kitchen at the dinner service. He assures Mitch that he is here and he needs to find that voice in the kitchen. Mitch tells him that he is not sure about being a leader, but, he will give it a try. Gordon introduces two specials - a shepherd’s pie and fish & chips for the dinner service. Everyone loves shepherd’s pie and chips. Gordon asks Mitch to expedite the kitchen. The cooks in the kitchen ask about if there is a way to precook the chips or make the burgers fast. Gordon tells them that it all will be fresh, as per orders.

The dinner service starts slowly due to handwritten orders. Orders leave the kitchen slow. The specials are going well. The regular menu is still disappointing the customers. Mitch is inefficient in expediting and the kitchen gets backed up. Customers are returning the food. Gordon realizes the problem with the cooks. They are sending raw burgers and poor shepherd’s pie to the dining room. Gordon seeks help and calls a local chef into the kitchen. After the dinner service, Gordon introduces local chef James to the owners.

Relaunch:

Overnight, Gordon’s team revamps the decor and feel of the restaurant. The next morning, Gordon unveils the new Grasshopper Also (Yelp in the resources) to the staff. Everyone is happy with the decor changes. There is a family table at the center of the restaurant and the whole place looks spacious and welcoming. Gordon then shows them the dishes from the new menu. The menu has traditional Irish dishes, the staff loves the new dishes.

On relaunch night, chef James is behind the line and Mitch is expediting. The appetizers go out quickly and the customers are loving the new menu. Mitch again slows down as he is struggling with expediting. The kitchen gets backed up and chef and cooks are waiting for Mitch to call out orders. As the food stops coming out, Chief comes in the kitchen. A big fight breaks out between Maureen and Chief and Gordon ask everyone to stop.

Gordon asks chef James to expedite and sends Mitch to the dining room as a server. Mitch mixes up the tables and food is going to the wrong tables. Gordon asks Mitch to stay out of the kitchen. Chef James turns the service around and pushes the food out of the kitchen. The kitchen ends the dinner service on a high note. Customers are happy with the food and relaunch is successful. After the relaunch, Gordon sits down with the owners. he tells them that they quickly need to make changes to the staff.

What happened next?

As the episode closes, they show that chef Mario is shown door few days after the relaunch. Chef James is there as a consultant and is training the cooks. Mitch is working closely with chef James and is now leading the kitchen in a better way. Yelp reviews for the restaurant are mainly mixed. Last comments, however, are quite positive.

Grasshopper Also Pub and Restaurant closed and sold in October 2012. There was a new management, new makeover and new staff. It was transformed into a sports bar called The Eatside Ale House (Link in the resources). The new owners posted the following message on Facebook:

"For everyone who has supported Mitch, Maureen, and Chief for so many years, we would like to say thank you. And on behalf of the new ownership and management of the Grasshopper, we wish them the best and thank them for many years of great service. As for the future, we hope to only grow on the great foundation the Grasshopper has laid out for us. There will be many new things coming, all for the better. All are always welcome at the Grasshopper and we look forward to continuing to grow with you!”

Yelp reviews were bad and they closed down pretty soon. In its place, a Spanish restaurant Segovia Meson (Yelp link in the resources) is operating and reviews are above average.
