In this two episode edition of the Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon Ramsay visits a dysfunctional family running a burger joint Burger Kitchen in Los Angeles, CA. The restaurant has been open for only 16 months but has seen over 10 menu changes, 10+ chef changes and about 20 server changes.

The restaurant owner Alan Saffron used his own $250,000 (what he received in inheritance) and also invested $250,000 from his son’s (Daniel Saffron) account without telling him. Alan considers this a fair partnership but his son Daniel does not believe that. Daniel thinks that he has been cheated and his father does not involve him in any business decisions and he also does not tell him about restaurant’s finances. Gordon is impressed by the central LA location of the restaurant and he also is okay with restaurant’s decor.

Gordon sits down with Alan and Gen who reveals that the restaurant is loosing around $6000 per month. Alan is sure that Yelp has something to do with his dwindling business and they are out there harming his restaurant’s reputation by never approving 5 star reviews. Gordon is surprised to know the number of changes in menu, chefs and servers in such a short span. Gordon sits down to sample some food, his server tells him that there is lack of management and food quality suffers a lot due to the wrong practices.

Food Sampling:

Gordon orders few 3 regular burgers and a special Australian meat pie. Alan is confident with his food and speculates that Gordon is going to love the meat pie. All the burgers are raw and not seasoned. The meat pie is soggy from the bottom, Gordon terms it ‘cat food’. Gordon meets the Chef David Blaine, who tells Gordon that he does not have any freedom in the kitchen and he is serving what the owners have asked him to serve.

Gordon challenges Chef to prepare one fresh burger on his own with his skills. Gordon goes out to quickly meet the son Daniel Saffron and his fiance Wendy. Upon return, Gordon tastes the “Redemption Burger” made by Chef David and likes it. Alan and Gen also taste it, but Gen does not like it.

 

Dinner service and kitchen inspection:

For dinner service Daniel takes charge of the service and as menu consists of just reheating the frozen burgers, food leaves the kitchen very fast. But, as the orders pile up and order management is difficult, Chef and Daniele start a fight over one order. Chef David threatens to beat up Daniel, Daniel fires him and the whole kitchen goes down in chaos.

Within few minutes of leaving, chef David comes back to get his cheque and fights with the owners over his due money. Daniel breaks down after this whole fight, Gordon consoles him and advice him to stay strong. Daniel gets that sense of trust and confidence from Gordon and he gets back to the kitchen.

The next day Gordon invites them all to a neighbourhood theatre and brings out influential food bloggers and Yelpers to counter Alan’s theory. Representative from Yelp also validates the fairness of the portal but Alan still does not believe it. A fellow restaurant owner also share his way of dealing with negative comments. Ben thinks this as a joke and pretends to sleep, which Gordon does not like and calls her out.

To tackle the mistrust in the family, Gordon make the owners sit down and discuss the issues out. Daniel blames Alan of taking his money and push him into his (Alan’s) dream. He just want them to accept that what they did was wrong. Alan tries to defend himself but Daniel stops him from making any more excuses. Gen says that she can not stand Wendy but for family and to save the restaurant she will try to bond together unconditionally. They agree to try and move past their differences with a positive mindset to take the restaurant forward.

In the evening kitchen service Gordon asks Daniel to take the lead. Apart from small issues he delivers it good.

 

Restaurant makeover and relaunch::

Gordon’s design team gives a new makeover to the restaurant. Gordon also installed a brand new Lavu POS system to make things easier in the kitchen. Gordon revamps the menu with fresh streak of burgers and related entrees. Everyone like the new direction. Gordon shares with them that in order to create a positive buzz among food lovers he has invited writers from Yelp, Urban Spoon, Chow and other major food networks and sites.

Daniel who leads the kitchen starts pretty strong and customers love the new menu. However, Alan, just can’t stay out of the kitchen. He starts to intrude the deliveries thus confusing the whole system. Food reviewers at Chow sends back their food as it is raw from the inside.

Daniel makes Alan to stick to his defined position and take back control of the kitchen and closes strong. Gordon praises Daniel and Alan and Gen promise to let Daniel run the kitchen going forward with least interference from their side.

What happened to Burger Kitchen, Los Angeles, California after relaunch?

After the kitchen Nightmares, the staff was changed many times. Some eaters also pointed that none of the burgers launched by Gordon were present when they went back to the joint. The POS system installed as part of the revamp was also missing and is no longer used to take orders.

In August 2011, the restaurant is said to have change in the ownership and by October 2011 the new branding was also seen. Online reviews continued to be negative. For lease sign was seen at the restaurant in January and they finally closed down the next month. Burger Kitchen closed in February 2012.

There is also a conspiracy that the whole Kitchen Nightmares episode was a stage up and coverup by Alan for selling his story as a novel and later as a motion picture (web archive link in the resources).

Luigi’s opened in it’s place and they also closed down after some time. Jaffa Middle Eastern restaurant leased the space after Luigi’s but as latest as 17th December 2019, they also closed down this location (news report in the resources).
