In this episode of Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon visits The Greek at the Harbor in Ventura, California. The owners at the restaurant are husband and wife Makis and Lynn Mikelatos. They are running this Greek restaurant since 1994. The restaurant was running successful all these years, however, for past 2-3 years food standards have dropped and customers have deserted the place.

Makis’s son Aris wants to get training and hands on in kitchen service but Makis won’t allow it. Each and overtime Aris expresses his wish to help his father, he gets a negative response. Ari understands that his father is old and wants support.

Gordon arrives at the restaurant and is impressed with the location. He meets Lynn and Makis and questions them on declining profits. Gordon fails to understand what is stopping this restaurant from making money with this busy location.

Food Sampling:

Gordon meets the server Demetri and orders calamari, hot platter, cold platter and moussaka. Calamari is greasy and bland. Humus in cold platter is too runny and tries to eat it with the help of a straw. Hot platter’s dishes are too dry. He sends all the food back and terms it as an embarrassment to Greece.

Gordon calls every cook out and questions them over bad food quality. The chef says that they are doing what they are told. They are aware that this is the wrong way. However, Makis has a way and they are following it.

 

Dinner service and kitchen inspection:

Gordon arrives to observe the dinner service and kitchen sends out dishes very fast. Gordon is amazed by the way they are sending the food but customers are not happy. What all goes out in dining room comes back with negative feedbacks. Gordon inspects the kitchen and finds that everything is pre-cooked and is simply reheated.

During the service, Aris comes into the kitchen and asks if things are running okay, Makis asks him to leave. Gordon asks Aris the reason and Aris tells Gordon that his father probably is tired of running the restaurant, but, when he asks him to teach him, Makis simply refuses.

Gordon sits down with Lynn to find the source of the friction between father and son. Lynn tells Gordon that at his graduation party, Aris called all his friends in the restaurant and in front of them and the staff he made a remark that he will make something out of his life and won’t waste it in the restaurant. That statement had hurt Makis and Lynn and Makis is not able to get past it till date.

Gordon asks Makis and Aris to resolve the differences. The next day, just to be sure that they both are positive with moving forward, Gordon handcuffs father and son with each other and asks them to prepare some dish in the kitchen together, which they did.

 

Restaurant makeover and relaunch::

Equipped with the knowledge that father and son have moved on, Gordon’s team gives the restaurant a makeover. Old dated decor is replaced with open, sunny & vibrant decor with Mediterranean touch. Everyone likes the new decor. Gordon also introduces the staff and the owners to a new fresh Greek menu.

On the relaunch night, Gordon asks Aris to expedite the service. Despite this as his first time, Aris does a wonderful job and food moves out of the kitchen at an amazing pace. Customers are happy with the food with overall positive vibe. Gordon catches a dish leaving which is cold and asks Aris to take control of the service.

Aris takes immediate notice and starts to send each dish after testing it. Without even a single complaint from any customer, dinner service closes successfully. Gordon is impressed with Aris’s ability to take responsibility.

What happened to The Greek at the Harbor, Ventura, California after relaunch?

As shown on the closing part of the episode, Aris continued to lead the kitchen and food service with help of Makis. Makes is happy and relieved and considering retirement.

The Greek at the Harbour is still open and reviews among online portals are positive. Aris is still a part of the staff and do indulge in weekend dance shows from time to time. Makis and Lynns’s daughter Marika who was graphic designer and was working as waitress has decided to go into the medical field with the full support of her family.

Reviews across review portals like Yelp, Zomato, TripAdvisor are positive. Few of the old diners expressed their distaste of Gordon’s menu after the relaunch, but since relaunch this restaurant has managed good stream of positive reviews.
