Kitchen Nightmares (US) S04 E14: Oceana, New Orleans, LA - OPEN

In this edition of the Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon visits Oceana, New Orleans, LA. In 2008, two brothers Rami and Moe took the charge of the restaurant from their father. In introduction part, Rami thinks that biggest issue that needs handling is Moe. Moe is hot-headed and servers do not feel comfortable around him when he is angry. Moe also does not want to change anything as he thinks his chef Damon cooks good food. Rami thinks chef Damon cannot cook food. As per servers, apart from Moe, hygiene is a big issue with the restaurant. There are rats and roaches everywhere and no one takes ownership to change anything.

Gordon arrives at the restaurant, Moe and Rami welcome him. Gordon wonders about two different type of restaurants. Rami tells Gordon that the new section is part of restaurant extension they did a while back. Rami tells Gordon that they have the same menu for both the places. It just looks like different restaurants. He wants to make it as one restaurant, but Moe opposes the idea, Rami adds.

Gordon talks to server Nell about photographs in the menu. Nells Tells Gordon that they are ex-employees. She tells that the owners are very intimidating and getting fired is a common thing in Oceana. She herself had been fired 4 times, that surprises Gordon.

Food Sampling:

Gordon orders seafood gumbo, crab cake platter, and blackened bayou duck. Chef Damon is confident that Gordon is going to like his food. The gumbo is disgusting and it tastes old. Moe and Damon taste the gumbo and think that it is good. The crab cakes are soggy like they are defrosting, Gordon sends them back as well. The blackened duck is very tough, gets back to the kitchen. Moe thinks that is perfect and starts eating it.

Gordon meets the kitchen staff. When Gordon asks about crab cakes being frozen, chef Damon denies. Rami takes Gordon’s side and tells him that they freeze crab cakes. Gordon demands to know when the duck was cooked. Kitchen staff does not know, Moe tells Gordon that they cook duck once in a month. Gordon is angry with the fact that there is no accountability and everyone is lying.

Dinner service and kitchen inspection:

Gordon arrives at the restaurant to oversee the dinner service. The customers are not liking the food and dish after dish is coming back to the kitchen. Gordon notices that warmer unit is not working and things inside it are at room temperature. The crabs are milky and there is a batch of old prawns. The smell is disgusting and Gordon vomits after smelling the prawns. The refrigerator is full of pre-cooked pasta and crawfish. Gordon also finds a mouse trap with three dead mice in. After seeing the dreadful condition of the kitchen, Gordon shuts down the restaurant.

Gordon gets a professional help of exterminators to get rid of rats and roaches. Gordon asks the staff to clean the restaurant. Moe pushes everyone to clean it fast. Moe blames Rami for not checking the state of the kitchen. Both brothers sit down and Moe acknowledges that this is the wake-up call and they need to get rid of chef Damon. Rami calls chef Damon and Moe fires him.

The next day, Moe and Rami tell Gordon that chef Damon is gone. Gordon asks if they have any recipes. Moe responds that he has all the recipes in his head. Gordon calls him “busy idiot” which upsets Moe a lot. Rami helps Moe calm down by saying that “busy idiot” is a good thing. Gordon tells them that he has plans of transformation but he needs them to agree on whatever he is doing. The owners allow Gordon to make changes as per his liking. Moe gets nostalgic about the restaurant.

Relaunch:

Overnight, Gordon’s design team gives a much-needed makeover to the restaurant, the place does not look like two restaurants anymore. The staff is happy about all the decor changes. Moe takes his time to respond but he is also positive about the changes. Gordon shows them new menu for the relaunch. Moe is happy to see a duck dish, it tastes amazing. Gordon tells them that he has his three chef to oversee the relaunch.

The kitchen starts off strong and customers are loving all the new changes. Rami is handling the kitchen and Moe is responsible to handle the front of the house. Moe strolls into the kitchen, Rami and Gordon chase him out and ask him to socialize in the dining area. Moe again strolls into the kitchen and Gordon pushes him out again. The dinner service is going really good.

Moe wants to take a break and goes out of the kitchen, Gordon follows him but is unable to stop him. Despite Moe missing, kitchen closes the dinner service on a high note and the relaunch is a success. After the dinner service, Gordon asks Moe to embrace the changes and stick with them. Gordon leaves but is unsure about the future of Oceana.

What happened next?

Oceana Grill restaurant (Yelp link in the resources) is still open and online reviews are positive. Few websites report that the owners have changed, but, that probably is wrong. Rami and Moe are still there and their father is still is listed as the owner of the restaurant (Link in the resources) on the corporate website.

After the relaunch, reviews were mixed, many people have reported that nothing has changed and the food is still the same. Most of the staff that featured on the show has left. There was also a report that the restaurant was running incentive offer for leaving reviews.
